University of California Essay Prompts for 2011 Applicants

Respond to both prompts, using a maximum of 1,000 words total. You may allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words. Stay within the word limit as closely as you can. A little over -- 1,012 words, for example --- is fine.

Prompt #1 (freshman applicants):
Describe the world you come from -- for example, your family, community or school -- and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

Prompt #1 (transfer applicants):
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field -- such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities -- and what you have gained from your involvement.

Prompt #2 (all applicants):
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

College Essay Services is NOT an essay-writing service. These types of services are readily available on-line -- from people who are paid to generate essays from scratch. We view this practice as highly unethical, and are opposed to what we regard as cheating on the college essay process.

Instead, we help students find their own voice, uncover their passions, and put their interests and insights into words that convey sensitivity, honesty and genuine reflection.

Every student has a story to tell. Using their own experiences as a guide, all students have within themselves the ability to express the values, goals, interests and opinions they embody.

CES helps students understand what they already know, express their own thoughts on paper, refine their personal writing style, and create authentic essays.

But we do not write essays.

I look back on the first time we sat at the kitchen, and you started asking questions and he started to express himself. We knew he had lots stored up, but he never really expressed himself. You tapped into a part of Connor that freed him.

I want to thank you so much for taking such an interest in Connor. I hope some day he realizes how much you helped him. It is so important for kids to have people like you in their lives to help them take the steps down a path, to look in windows, to open doors, to attempt to find what they are looking for in life. So I want you to know that you were greatly appreciated.

-- Jeanne R., San Diego, CA

Thank you for your superb job in helping my son with his college essay. You are truly gifted and make writing look so easy. You showed my son how to organize his ideas into a coherent and well written essay. You made his standard rhetoric sound very interesting and scholarly. We can't thank you enough for your kindness and professionalism. You are simply "the best."

-- Patty B., Del Mar, CA

Your high ethical standards and unwillingness to compromise those standards are one of your strongest assets. You are not just a writer; you are an exceptional communicator with a higher purpose. There are very few journalists I have known who have your level of passion for excellence. The quality of the end product is always excellent. This will translate to quality for the individual contracting your services. We respect tremendously the work you have done and wish you the best of luck.

-- Raffi S., San Diego, CA

Thank you very much. I am deeply gratified for all of your help writing and revising my essays. I think all your help was one of the factors that helped me get in.

-- Rodrigo B., San Diego, CA (Accepted to Claremont McKenna College, fall 2009)

CES charges $500 for the complete service -- from idea to finished essay. This includes up to six hours of consulting.

For students who need fewer services and prefer not to buy the complete package, CES charges $100 per hour.

Whether with the package or the hourly rate, CES provides assistance for all essays -- the Common Application, the University of California application, and all individualized supplements required by many universities. The supplemental applications may include additional long essays, as well as shorter, one-paragraph essays.

A superior college essay does not guarantee entry to the college of your choice. But a weak or phony essay can close the door on many of your applications.
